We have lots of tasty local snacks here in Nigeria and each of these snacks in one way or the other has some benefits they do to the body.

I am sure you do not know this but reading this post to the end will surely make you know.

Here are some local snacks and their benefits;

1. Kuli Kuli

Kuli Kuli is a crunchy snack from Nupe tribe in North Central Nigeria. It is made from Groundnut, Pepper, Ginger and Groundnut oil.

Kuli kuli is a rich source of protein and vitamins. It is rich in calcium and magnesium. It contains healthy fats, high in dietary fibre and also good for weight loss.

Kuli Kuli can be eaten with Garri,Pap or Custard. You are missing a lot of you haven’t tried Kuli Kuli snack.

2. Aadun

Aadun is a snack from the South Western part of Nigeria. It is made form roasted Corn flour, Palm oil, Salt and Chilli powder.

It is rich in crude fibre, calorie iron, magnesium and phosphorus. It helps in reducing the risks of diseases like Cancer, Cataract and High cholesterol.

3. Dodo Ikire

Dodo Ikire is a snack originated from the South West Nigeria in Osun State . It is made from over ripe plantains, red bell pepper, palm oil, vegetable oil and salt.

Plantains contain protein, carbohydrates, fibre, potassium vitamins (C,A and B6) and Magnesium that are good for the body.

4. Owowo (Boiled corn and shaved coconut)

Owowo is another local snack you need to taste if you haven’t. It is made from coconut, fresh corn, salt and sugar.

Coconut is also rich in fibre, improves the heart health, contains magnesium which improves immunity.

Corn is rich in fibre, it contains vitamin B and also aids digestion. You are missing a lot if you haven’t tried this snack.

5. Kilishi (Nigerian beef jerky)

Kilishi originated from the Hausa tribe in Nigeria. It is a form of dried Suya.

It is made from beef, suya spice,garlic, cloves, ginger, dry cayenne pepper seeds, date, palm, seasoning cubes,salt, honey and onions.

It is a good source of protein and suitable for diabetics as it contains no fat.

6. Ojojo ( Yam fritters)

Ojojo is made from water yam,scotch bonnet,onions, seasoning cubes,salt and vegetable oil for frying.

The water yam is rich in fibre, helps to suppress blood sugar, contains essential amount of Vitamin C and antioxidants.

Ojojo can be eaten with Pap, Garri or Oatmeal.

7. Wara ( Nigerian local cheese curds)

Wara originated from a a city called Wara in Kwara state. It is a snack made from Cow milk.

It is high in beneficial protein, it contains high level of methionine that protect the liver against becoming fat.

Eating Wara is a great substitute for eating meat.
